Emergency Procedures and American Hotels & Lodging Association Guest Safety Tips
- In case of medical emergency or if some other emergency assistance is needed, pick up the in-room telephone. DIAL 9, THEN DIAL 9-1-1.
- If there is any indication or even a suspicion of fire, call the hotel operator by dialing “0” on the in-room telephone. Give your name, room number, and a brief description of the situation.
- Leave your room immediately and follow Hotel Evacuation Routes and meet at the
nearest Emergency Meeting Point outdoors where all guests and staff will be accounted for. Close the door to your room behind you. - If you are outside of your room and suspect there is a fire in your room, notify the hotel operator immediately of the situation. Feel the door with the back of your hand. If the doorknob is warm, do not open the door.
- If the door is warm, slowly open the door, but be ready to close it quickly should smoke start to roll out. Proceed down the nearest emergency stairway and out to the nearest Emergency Meeting Point outdoors.
- If the entrance door to your room is blocked by fire or smoke, advise the Front Desk of the situation and proceed to the patio/balcony. Make sure to close the patio/balcony door behind you. Once outside, signal for help by waving or hanging an item such as a bed sheet from the patio/balcony to attract attention to your exact location.
- Do not jump from the patio/balcony, especially if you are on the third, fourth, or fifth floors. A fall from that height can cause serious bodily injury, rather, continue to protect yourself from the fire and signal for help. The hotel’s staff will provide assistance and instruction for evacuating from the third, fourth, or fifth floor patios/balconies.
- Don't answer the door in a hotel or motel room without verifying who it is. If a person claims to be an employee, call the front desk and ask if someone from their staff is supposed to have access to your room and for what purpose.
- Keep your room key with you at all times and don't needlessly display it in public. Should you misplace it, please notify the front desk immediately.
- Close the door securely whenever you are in your room and use all of the locking devices provided.
- Check to see that any sliding glass doors or windows and any connecting room doors are locked.
- Don’t invite strangers to your room.
- Do not draw attention to yourself by displaying large amounts of cash or expensive jewelry.
- Place all valuables in the hotel's safe deposit box.
- When returning to your hotel late in the evening, be aware of your surroundings, stay in well-lighted areas, and use the main entrance.
- Take a few moments and locate the nearest exit that may be used in the event of an emergency.
- If you see any suspicious activity, notify the hotel operator or a staff member.
