FIVE GEORGIA HOTELS RECEIVE ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION
For meeting planners interested in tapping into the growing “green” market, the Georgia Green Hotels Program has certified five hotels as environmentally “green” based on the standard established by Green Seal, an independent nonprofit environmental standard-setting and certification organization.
The five hotels that have been certified as charter members of the fledging program are: Emory Conference Center Hotel, FieldstoneResort, Holiday Inn Beach Resort at Jekyll Island, Len Foote Hike Inn and the Whitaker-Huntingdon Inn.
“These hotels have taken steps to protect our state’s natural resources, and I commend them for their decision,”said Governor Sonny Perdue. “Good stewardship of our environment is one of our most important obligations.”
The environmental standard for lodging properties contains 36 criteria in six major facility categories, including: waste minimization, reuse and recycling; energy efficiency; conservation and management; management of fresh water resources; wastewater management, hazardous substances; and environmentally and socially sensitive purchasing policies.
“As part of Emory University we want to mirror the commitment that is shown to the environment,” said Kathryn Johnson, general manager of the Emory Conference Center Hotel. “With the number of Emory departments, corporate and association clients that we provide our services to, we realize what a significant impact that we can make. Most importantly, it is the right thing to do.
